Project name: Structured Symbiosis
Project location: Mumbai, India
Firm name: HKS
Jury comments: This project uses architecture to bring the aboriginal Koli people of Mumbai together with non-Koli people of Mumbai. There is a gritty intensity to the design and the jury appreciated that the drawings were more illustrative than architectural—a technique better suited to telling this story. The proposed design looks very closely at the daily life and cultural needs of the Koli and non-Koli people. The design is also programmatically intense, investigating relationships between existing and new, shared use of public space, and conservation and restoration of the mangrove waterfront. Central to the design is the “blended space” shared equally by both the Koli and non-Koli inhabitants.
