Jury comments: Though we were somewhat unsettled by the kind of false facade that SLICE proposes, we were just as excited about the possibility for activation of underused streets and buildings that the project presents. Framing a shallow space about a bay wide as places for urban dwelling, the design endeavors to make use of vacant building stock. We love what this project could do for our city if reimagined for artist studios instead of housing–activating abandoned warehouses, providing space for creation and collaboration, and fostering an arts community that could engage the streetscape as well as structures.
