Jury comments: An incredibly beautiful and ambitious project, Shanghai Hongkou Stadium is so much more than a traditional stadium. With a slight but impossible gesture–a twisting of the stadium top–the structure becomes something entirely new. In addition to the usual paid seats, the stadium affords views to those who haven’t paid entry, tucking in a public viewshed. Multiple modes of transportation surround the stadium–including paths for cycling, running, and walking–making it a destination for more than just sporting events. This stadium is iconic.
