Project name: Renwick Gallery Grand Salon Design Competition
Project location: Washington DC
Firm name: Marlon Blackwell Architects
Jury comments:
This project is incredibly well considered. The jury was captivated by the baroque intensity of the design, feeling it stands up to the ornate quality of the original architecture of the Renwick Gallery building. The design creates a space with an incredible quality of light. It is baroque ornamentation done in a contemporary manner. The ability for the topography of the ceiling structure to adapt to different programmatic uses was well defined and believably engineered. Even the transition from the ceiling to the walls was well executed. The jury felt that the “Forest to the City” commentary wasn’t that important. The design of the project stands on its own and need only let the sustainable story be a footnote and not the main title.
