Orange County Government Center

2015 Unbuilt Architecture & Design

Citation

Project name: Orange County Government Center

Project location: Goshen, New York

Firm name: designLAB architects

Jury comments:
This project brings new life to Paul Rudolph’s Orange County Government Center in Goshen NY.   The jury commented that the design represents a thoughtful re-interpretation and addition to the original complex.  The strategic demolition and skillful addition of new structures along with well executed improvements to the landscape breathe new life into the brutalist concrete structure.  Being able to pull this off requires skill and restraint.  Architects are often challenged in how to deal with these old brutalist structures–they are often too important to tear down so the task of bringing new life into them needs to be done with great care.  Under the hand of less a skillful architect the renovation of this building could have tragic consequences.
