Project name: Moon Island Zipline
Project location: Boston
Firm name: STUDIO ENÉE architects
Jury comments: Moon Island, located in Boston Harbor is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area and is home to the Boston Fire Department Training Academy and the Boston Police Department Firing Range along with four decommissioned sewage retention tanks from the 1800’s. It is hoped that Moon Island can be opened up to the public and that the tanks be repurposed. Currently there is no public access allowed to the island.
The project allows people to zip line over the island allowing them to experience the island that is currently still secure. The four sewage retention basins are repurposed as floating wetlands. The Zipline is anchored at two ends by concrete and glass towers and is accessed only by boat. The towers provide exhibits about the history of Moon Island and its sustainable mission.
This project draws attention to an exciting but unknown place close to the heart of Boston. The jury felt that this is a fun, compelling project. Some jurors thought there could be more zip lines and they could crisscross across the site making the zip line experience even more varied.
