Project name: LALA Gateway Bridge
Project location: Marina del Ray, CA
Firm name: Abramson Teiger Architects
Jury comments: The jury was challenged by this project, describing it as “beautiful,” inefficient,” and “perverse” at the same time. The curling ramp was thought of as an outdoor LA Guggenheim. The bridge, because of its scale, becomes a monument to Marina Del Ray and Los Angeles. One juror considered this bridge “so LA;” everything connects but none of it is practical. Even if not practical, the jury did consider this project an appropriate and compelling design for a bridge in LA. The jury felt that more efficient designs could be conceived of. But, if one is to build a monumental bridge in LA, should it not be beautiful, inefficient, perverse?
