Project name: Georgia Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal
Project location: Atlanta, Georgia
Firm name: FXFOWLE in association with Cooper Carry
Jury comments: This development project consists of 11.6 million square feet of new development located on a 119-acre parcel of land located south east of downtown Atlanta. This is an ambitious project composed of rail and bus infrastructure topped with retail, mixed-use office, hotel and residential structures. It is linked together with a “great room” that is a vast retail atrium. The roof of the structure is topped with a large public park. Stormwater retention and ground source heating and cooling are mentioned as sustainable elements of the project.
The jury admired the shear scale of the project and was impressed with the desire to take on such a major urban infrastructure project. This project makes something out of nothing and brings a level of grandness to public transportation. The jury hopes the project’s architecture will become more refined if and when the project gets the green light to move forward. Development of infrastructure will continue to be a critical element for large urban centers in America. This project, similar in scale to the Hudson Yards project now emerging in New York City, will need financial and political will to define its success.
