Project narrative: The Grayson Student Center’s adaptive reuse of an existing gymnasium shows the team’s early commitment to reducing new construction materials while elevating the space with natural light and incredible views. Previously covered windows were replaced with high-performance glazing systems and exterior solar shading, and the exterior envelope received recycled insulation throughout (walls were previously uninsulated). Diesel-fueled HVAC systems were replaced with modern electric systems. Now more visually open and ADA accessible, the front entry invites students, faculty, and the public to connect in a cross-disciplinary common space, connecting occupants to music practice, general teaching, and theater performance.

Jury comments: Taking a different approach to a sustainable outcome, the Grayson Student Center converted an existing 1954 gymnasium into a dynamic multi-use space; a transformative adaptive reuse, effectively limiting resources. The building now serves as an accessible and light-filled beacon to the greater community, welcoming the public to performances in the Commons or black box theater. The interior is lovely, and adding a mezzanine level is a very clever way to achieve more space. Well integrated with “Zones of Opportunity” with a beautiful environment on the side of Lake Winnipesaukee.
