Project name: Baghere Health and Nutrition Center
Project narrative: Our project seeks to fight malnutrition and food insecurity in the community of Baghere, Senegal. We envision a center where families receive health checkups and play while learning about agriculture’s best practices and nutritional cooking. The Baghere Nutrition Center design brings local materials into a new form by utilizing passive ventilation while capturing 274,323 gallons/yr of rainwater and funneling it into a network of deep cisterns capable of storing 76,000 gallons for use in dry seasons. Each pavilion has a unique program serving the general purposes of healthcare, dormitory, food preparation, education, and community gathering.

Jury comments: This project expertly integrates form and function in a way that appears almost effortless. An astute understanding of building science, sustainability and regional thinking clearly drove the development of its lithesome form, and what resulted was a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Additionally, the project’s ambition to more efficiently store rainwater and combat malnutrition in a region prone to intense drought makes the design equally timely as it is beautiful. A successful project, though we would have loved to know more about the project’s greater context and its community.
