Project name: Bourne Intermediate School
Project narrative: This project used an integrative design process as part of the successful pursuit of LEED Silver Certification to achieve a sustainable and holistic new school focused on community wellbeing. Central to the massing and orientation of the new building were considerations of the local microclimate, solar exposure, and orientation to pre-existing recreational and educational amenities. Features include an HVAC approach tuned to the path of the sun, a stormwater management system that mimics the natural infiltration capacity of existing soil, indoor air quality through materials selection and filtration, optimized daylighting, plentiful views, and a design that encourages mobility and connection.

Jury comments: The jury was excited about the subtleness of this project; integrating well with its topographical location and indoor and outdoor access for the students. The interconnected campus maximizes natural daylight and promotes physical well-being in the spaces students inhabit most. There are a variety of team breakout spaces that encourage learning opportunities with both bold colors and soft warm wood tones. This is a holistic, district-wide solution from a single building project.
