Project narrative: This project addresses the unique context of a Tribal Nation located in the desert southwest and creates a sustainable, ecologically sensitive and culturally appropriate K-6 school. Design draws inspiration from practices and traditions that have sustained the Tribe in this place over millennia and responds to the values and priorities that have and will continue to help the Community to chart a path of resiliency and self-determination. The project was designed in respectful collaboration with the Nation and with a high degree of reverence for the land, ecosystem and resources. The project is designed to welcome and educate all learners.

Jury comments: There is a prioritization of access and connection between the interior and exterior in a demanding and difficult desert climate, with a cultural attentiveness with integration of local artists. With fundamental objectives around self-determination, preservation, equity and resiliency, the project was designed to provide a culturally appropriate, uplifting and highly integrated educational environment. This is a great example of holistic design.
