Project name: Not A Building, A Park/Mission Hill
Project location: Boston
Firm name: Sebastian Mariscal Studio
Jury comments: This project is a 44 unit mixed-use development located in Mission Hill Boston. It is a winning response to the Boston Redevelopment Authority and Department of Neighborhood Development E+ Building Program for projects that demonstrate energy positive developments in Boston.
The project provides 50,000 square feet of open green space in the form of a community rooftop garden, 5 community courtyards and 51 private gardens.
The jury felt that this is a bold urban intervention and presents a new paradigm for urban housing. The design team collaborated with the Mission Hill community through a process of twenty plus public meetings that resulted in a project that will have tangible relevance to the community and create a meaningful social impact. The Sebastian Mariscal Studio team demonstrated their ability to skillfully craft a design that integrated public, semi public and private spaces into a well-conceived totality. Interesting spaces are formed in a very complicated social environment. The use of topography allows for easy access to the roof top gardens while the residences reside in the walkways and courtyards below.
