Project name: Head Start Child and Family Center
Project location: Springfield, Massachusetts
Firm name: Maryann Thompson Architects
Jury comments: This small school on a tight urban site is a high achiever by many measures. Its systems are all-electric, and it is Net Zero Energy, and achieved LEED Platinum. The design approach for energy and durability, combined with integration of context and community, were clearly front of mind for the architect at every step. Every detail prioritizes childrens’ health and supports the organization’s mission. With the simple introduction of rain barrels for stormwater collection, this project becomes more than a sustainable building–it becomes a learning opportunity . The architect’s capacity to make such a project possible with just a six-month timeline speaks to a preparedness to design a beautiful, functional, and sustainable building that serves as a reminder of what deep knowledge and experience with sustainable design can bring to the table.
