Project name: King Open/Cambridge Street Upper Schools and Community Complex
Project location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Firm name: William Rawn Associates, Architects with Arrowstreet
Jury comments: This colorful complex checks all the boxes for us. The result of a thoughtful and extensive community engagement process, the project opens itself up to neighborhood residents while artfully maintaining the separation and privacy of school spaces. The project successfully leverages many sustainable tools and strategies: geothermal wells, great expanses of photovoltaic on all of the roof real estate; the smart use of an urban site. In addition to the design team’s masterful design, the City of Cambridge deserves recognition for its investment in an ambitious project that sets the bar for future schools and libraries. We wish all projects could express delight , integrate such high standards of conservation, and serve as a welcoming place for the broader community.
