Project location: Rockport, Massachusetts
Firm name: Epstein Joslin Architects
Jury comments: A 335-seat concert hall with a lobby and upstairs reception area is inserted into a historic building on the main street of a seaside resort town. The interior has been completely reconfigured as a multipurpose music-performance venue that uses a dramatic floor-to-ceiling window to connect the stage to the ocean outside. The theater is gorgeous. The street face of the building is a handsome, energized version of its original 19th-century-mercantile aesthetic, made lighter with French balconies. The back of the building’s waterfront facade is a letdown and looks out of place among the rest of the subtle surroundings. In general, there is disjunction between the lush and lovely aspects of the interior, which is so successful (though with too much tile), and the exterior, which is bland.
