Jury comments: This project is an original design within the gut renovation of a historic Back Bay townhouse. The architect has designed an open floor plan to accommodate living, working, and entertaining. It’s a remarkable transition. The bright, sunlit atrium that greets visitors is a welcome contrast to the building’s brooding 19th-century entryway and common hallway. The atrium not only brings in light but also mediates the various zones in the apartment. It’s a creative use of space that offers a nice range of options. We particularly liked the continuous wall of tightly laid grey schist around the atrium that anchors and organizes the plan. Warm and tactile materials along with the natural light soften the apartment’s clean lines and modern aesthetic. Details are thoughtfully expressed.
