Project name: Teton Mountain House
Project overview: The Teton Mountain House is a ski-in, ski-out contemporary mountain home in Jackson, Wyoming. The chalet draws inspiration from traditions of mountain architecture native to both Western and Alpine cultures and was designed to blend seamlessly with its environment. Built on a challenging triangular site, the residence has three main facades and was integrated into the mountainside to minimize its visual scale. Quintessential pitched roof forms, shifting volumes, and local materials, including Atlas Granite, and Western Red Cedar, are utilized throughout to reflect the home’s natural surroundings.
The residence was designed for a couple and their large extended family with the goal of building a home within the mountains that allows for both moments of private respite and group gatherings. The project is a resilient, durable, and sustainable multi-generational home, meant to be enjoyed by family members for decades to come.
The residence incorporates a high-performance envelope with triple-glazed windows, a cold roof, and geothermal systems while maintaining a small physical footprint. Nestled into the landscape, the site allows occupants to experience and appreciate expansive views through an orientation-conscious spatial and volumetric design. Exterior spaces include multiple decks and deep overhangs from a dramatic cantilevered roof, providing passive shading and protection from the elements. The home is accessed via a 007-inspired underground garage tunnel that eliminates the impact of multiple garage doors and is covered with a green roof system of native vegetation.

Jury comments: This Western and Alpine culture-inspired mountain home is equipped with many unique features and seamlessly blends into the beautiful mountain site. The team was conscious about minimizing disturbance of the landscape by building down rather than out. The use of local materials, native plant landscaping, and high-performance envelope have created a resilient and durable home for the family.
