Jury comments: A dormant but well-loved relic on a college campus becomes a welcoming student center. The design successfully mingles the old and the new, creating an exciting and elegant juxtaposition of the NeoGothic with an open, Midcentury Modern aesthetic that is both exciting and elegant. New elements are expressed in steel and glass as a counterpoint to the historic warm wood. Brass handrails, doorknobs, and other details are gorgeous. The renovated exterior offers a new entrance where visitors are greeted by a lobby that is flooded with light. Marvelous trusses soar through every view. A neutral carpet tile unifies the interiors while accent wall colors vary by department. It’s a bold, stunning space where we imagine people love to work.
