Jury comments: This adaptive reuse project transforms a massive and challenging landmark. The architect honored the historic building’s character while bringing it into the twenty-first century with a vibrant marketplace atmosphere and a consistent visual vocabulary. Even interstitial hallway spaces and features like the railing are handsome and well thought out. Though we’re recognizing projects for their remarkable interiors, the connection between the indoors and the outdoors is an important feature of 401 Park, with generous spaces welcoming community to gather and socialize in its open interiors or the reclaimed parking lot.
