Award level: Citation: Affordable Housing
Project name: 22 Tarrytown Road Workforce Housing
Project location: Greenburgh, New York
Firm name: Magnusson Architecture and Planning
Jury comments: With massing articulated in a series of vertical volumes to break up its horizontality, this well-designed project looks great—not at all like affordable housing. But we don’t know how well it works in situ because the proposal never lets us glimpse the surrounding area. The new structure includes 28 dwelling units with common amenities and replaces three derelict buildings that were demolished. It’s within walking distance to transportation, shopping, and entertainment. The envelope is high performance; daylighting is well used; the units are outfitted with Energy Star–rated fixtures and appliances; and the green roof looks functional, though not especially inviting.
