Project name: Island Residence
Project location: Edgartown, Massachusetts
Firm name: Peter Rose + Partners
Jury comments: Nestled into a narrow strip of land on an island, this lovely single-family residence removes boundaries between structure and landscape, and allows the richly wooded coastal and wetland context to take the stage. By removing the existing driveway, the meadow was rehabilitated into a natural landscape to be experienced on foot. Garage and shed are sunk into the landscape, completely below the site lines of the main house. The main residence is split into two zones–one a low, single story living area for common rooms and the other a compact two story volume for seven bedrooms and four bathrooms. Each space has a unique orientation and relationship to the landscape and seascape. From the main entry, turning left to the living area, there are no interior walls, and steel beams span across the open space. All materials reflect the native topography.
