Project name: Harvard University Science and Engineering Complex
Project narrative: The sunshading screen at the exterior of the SEC is a powerful expression simultaneously of the building’s program mission as an engineering school and of its commitment to building a much more sustainable future. The design of this one-of-a-kind hydroformed sunshading screen engaged highly sophisticated engineering thinking and processes to deliver a sunshading system that significantly reduces the impact of solar loads on building conditioning systems and enables a host of low-energy approaches to thermal comfort. Furthermore, the extensive use of interior glazing and lively interior spatial geometry contribute to a well-lit and highly communicative experience throughout the building interior.

Jury comments: This project is impressive for the combined integration of a complex program, ambitious environmental and wellness certification goals, and design vision. We appreciated the diverse spaces created inside and outside of the building. The transitions from the open green yard to the variety of collaborative spaces created by the unique sectional qualities of the atrium exemplify a lively work/study environment. The shading screen is an example of a design element that balances data-driven design while being beautifully detailed, establishing an identity for the Complex.
