Project name: Charles Shain Library Renovation at Connecticut College
Project location: New London, Conneticut
Firm name: Schwartz/Silver Architects
Jury comments: By introducing windows, an under-utilized Brutalist building is transformed into a wonderful place for people. The exterior is now equally as strong at night as in the day. It is no longer a dead facade. The real success of this renovation is reflected inside. The interior incorporates a very controlled palette that is inspired by the woods and neutral tones, with only splashes of brighter color. This is a strong example of how to refresh a box on a budget, though there are some derivative moves.
