Project name: Brussels Market Building
Project location: Brussels, Belgium
Firm name: ORG Permanent Modernity
Jury comments: A public market that is refined, yet playful, this project mixes Brutalism with 80s postmodern forms. It transcends style, though it has a strong aesthetic with an industrial feel. The plan is clean. Using discipline with a vocabulary of iconic shapes, a story of tectonic play is told. The shapes are symmetrical but soft. Though the M form is a counterintuitive, it is a very efficient for spanning a great distance. We did wish to better understand how the formal choices were made. This project invites thinking about architecture in a non-architectural way. Here, concrete is not a structural idea, but a symbol. The window elements and arches are beautiful.
