Project location: Orlando, Florida
Firm name: Perkins+Will with Stanley Beaman & Sears
Jury comments: Part of a medical complex that is sited in a mixed-use residential and retail community, this project succeeds on every level. Inspired by its lush garden setting, the building truly matches the landscape. Waiting areas are flooded with natural light and filled with furnishings that are comfortable and encourage play. Patient rooms are spacious and comforting. The interior design is just incredible, filled with beautiful, modern, usable kiosks. Every interior space is clean, pleasant, and open. Even the restricted surgical corridor, usually a dark, basement-like environment, is bathed in natural light by floor-to-ceiling windows, which provide views to the gardens outside. The lighting is very clever. Kids have an opportunity to change the exterior colored lights from their own rooms. The building also has technical chops, with an impressive curtainwall and external shades to mitigate glare and heat gain. The structure is built to resist up to Category 4 hurricanes, which are typical to the region. Humane, gorgeous, functional, and innovative, this project represents the "whole package."
