Finalist
Project name: Tozzer Anthropology Building, Harvard University
Project location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Firm name: Kennedy & Violich Architecture
Jury comments: There is beauty in the ambition expressed by this building, as well as in its execution. The Tozzer library’s level of finish sets it apart from the rest of the building, though it may be alienating to some users without an understanding of formal architectural language.
Interior spaces are truly beautiful. The profound space and light incorporated in the atrium provides a transformative moment. The level of craft is exquisite and the architectural experimentation is commendable, though perhaps disconnected from its student users.
