Finalist
Project name: Education and Community Center, Korean Church of Boston
Project location: Brookline, Massachusetts
Firm name: Brian Healy Architects
Jury comments: The church clearly has transformative moments that engage shape, light, materiality, and program to create beauty. As the oldest structure among the finalists, it showed signs of unmediated age, which may have been a disadvantage. The architect admirably succeeds in uniting the existing building with the addition—though it seemed that there might have been more of a dialogue between the various building parts. The Children’s Chapel is the most impactful moment in the building. The jury sought a holistic, multidimensional beauty, as opposed to beauty that emerges in isolated moments.
