Project name: East Boston Branch Library, Boston Public Library
Project location: Boston
Firm name: William Rawn Associates, Architects
Jury comments: That the East Boston Branch Library would be an accessible public amenity for the neighborhood was inevitable; that it would be a true community space was not. The architect’s treatment of what could have been an average and competent building makes the East Boston Branch Library remarkable; a model for branch libraries throughout the city. Given boxy parameters, the architect added interest and variety where they could: particularly, in the ceiling. Swooping, wave-like trusses create a roof that at once creates feelings of intimacy and expansiveness. Windows at various points bring light farther into the building. One great room under a ceiling of warm wood slats, East Boston Public Library is a neighborhood anchor and icon.
