Project name: The Barn at Belmont Day School
Project location: Belmont, Massachusetts
Firm name: Utile, Inc.
Jury comments: This school is simply delightful. It makes straightforward environmental moves by using pre-engineered construction, photovoltaics, and passive cooling strategies. The architect doesn’t try to hide the prefabrication; instead, they work with the prefab structure, layering on a human scale and adding warm colors to make the building intimate and distinct. Great attention was paid to how teachers and students inhabit the building. We were particularly taken with a countertop subtly placed along a stair rail, making smart use of the space and providing a scaled space for human occupation.
