Project name: Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) IT Convergence Building
Project location: Daejeon, South Korea
Firm name: Kyu Sung Woo Architects
Jury comments: The exterior of this large new building is expressive and well-resolved at the ground where it interacts with the landscape. It’s a very elegant brutalist composition that embraces the use of concrete in a streamlined, modernist fashion. The environmental response is a standout feature of this project. The concrete acts like a garage. It can withstand pollution and weather, making it a logical choice of material. Though intellectually beautiful and consistent with the exterior, the interior feels a bit cold.
