Project name: Gateway Center, SUNY–ESF
Project location: Syracuse, New York
Firm name: Architerra
Jury comments: Timber is used very beautifully in this building. In a dynamic display of masterful craft work, eight species of wood are incorporated in unexpected and memorable ways that showcase forestry projects and educational objectives. Rigorous holistic planning is evident throughout the project, including the roof gardens and terraces. It’s a very elegant structure, overall, though some parts look a little mechanical. We note this because these unresolved moments present such disconnect with the more successful moves and connections.
