Project name: Corning Children’s Center
Project location: Corning, New York
Firm name: D.W. Arthur Associates Architecture
Jury comments: This early education center expresses the idea of community by creating a continuum of nested environments through which the children progress. The materiality of the interior is beautiful and everything is well-scaled for its users. There is an unexpected and highly commendable unity between landscape and interiors. Operable skylights and windows, the inclusion of translucent glass panels and window treatment modulate natural light and help control interior climate. We wish the overall massing felt a little more resolved. This project proves that architects can do something small, on a limited budget, and still produce excellent design.
