Project name: Billerica Memorial High School
Project location: Billerica, Massachusetts
Firm name: Perkins&Will
Jury comments: This remarkable project embodies a contemporary pedagogical approach to education clearly and effectively. The architect uses all the tools of architecture to create what seems to be just the right balance of permanence, variety, proportion, scale, and nature of spaces. We are taken by the brickwork, which, in combination with the form, creates a distinct identity for the school, tied to the heritage of Billerica. In addition to connecting to its context through material and form, the school offers spaces for the community to use, making it all the more a part of the town. The entry moment is a welcoming one, with warm wood and light from aboves. And the spaces throughout are comfortable and feel linked to the site. Billerica Memorial High School is a winning project.
