Award: Public Architecture
Project name: Myra Hiatt Kraft Memorial Footbridge
Project location: Worcester, Massachusetts
Firm name: Beals and Thomas
Jury comments: Many projects are lauded for their complexity. This one is commendable for its simplicity. An historic bridge is now beautifully, seamlessly made accessible while the design honors and reflects the structure that originally spanned the channel between two pools. Ice skaters glide beneath the bridge, so its original height could not be lowered. As a result, the approaches on either side of the bridge are elevated to include appropriately graded walkways that provide access to visitors of all abilities who have come to recreate in a park that contains elements designed by Olmsted.
