Frances Appleton Pedestrian Bridge

Project name: Frances Appleton Pedestrian Bridge
Project overview: The Frances Appleton Bridge is a multiuse structure on the banks of the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. It connects the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood to the riverfront Esplanade. The 14 ft (4.2 m) arch bridge has a 222 ft (67.6 m) clear span over Storrow Drive, a busy arterial roadway that separates the city from the river.
The bridge alignment incorporates generous curves to make the crossing more enjoyable for pedestrians and bicyclists by providing a variety of changing views. The 607 ft (185 m) bridge achieves visual transparency and lightness through its continuous steel superstructure, consisting of slender steel box girders that are curved in two directions and branch into two curved staircases. These staircases frame a scenic overlook with river views. The bridge features an architectural steel fascia of constant depth for visual consistency. The main steel arch, with a vertical clearance of 14.5 ft (4.4 m), was designed to complement the adjacent arches of the historic Longfellow Bridge while maintaining a contemporary appearance. The shape of the arch—wider at the crown and narrower at the abutments—minimizes impacts on the park. The bridge approaches include Y-shaped steel piers intended to visually resemble the branches of mature trees in the park.
The bridge is named after Frances Appleton, wife of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, to celebrate their union. The two bridges are visually compatible due to their similar structural arch systems, matching gray-green color, and overall visual quality. The Appleton Bridge is characterized by its technical innovation, elegant detailing, and context-sensitive design, integrating well into the parkland and historic riverfront.

Jury comments: This bridge combines engineering precision with accomplished design to create a structure that is both functional and beautiful. Its arching form references the nearby Longfellow Bridge, creating continuity while establishing its own presence. The bridge adds value to the neighborhood by transforming a necessary crossing, seamless in its design and accessible to nature, into a thoughtfully composed and approachable place. It feels light and open above Storrow Drive while remaining safe and grounded, offering a subtle, quiet beauty that enriches the city’s experience.
