Parkland 17 Memorial
Unbuilt Planning and Design
Project type: Conceptual
Commendation
Project name: Parkland 17 Memorial
Project overview: The memorial’s contemplative site sits in a nature preserve, cradled by a grove of trees. A path from the Welcome Center winds its way to the memorial through two large, planted areas of low native plants, acting as a land bridge, marking the arrival to the memorial. Visitors move directly into the center of the space, or approach slowly by circling the outer path prior to entering.
The memorial is composed of 17 individual petals of a flower representing each of the victims and, together, they become a bouquet—a beautiful bundle of individuals. The petals are sculpted of smooth concrete and are “planted” in a plinth of a stable stone dust surface, which feels soft under the feet, confirming visitors have entered a sacred space. Wrapping the edge of the plinth, an infinity edge water feature visually connects to the water beyond and offers the calming and gentle sound of continuously flowing water.
Each petal is aligned with the sun’s angle on February 14, casting a light pin on the ground. The design includes three taller petals for adult victims and 14 shorter ones for students. The stem of each petal is engraved with the victim’s name and story. Rainwater collects on each petal and flows down to smooth river stones, returning to the earth. The base of the petals is a space for offerings, and the memorial also serves as a gathering place for mourners. At night, the illuminated petals create a constellation of stars.
