Project narrative: The community-led design process created an interesting schism between the configuration of the plan in relation to the figuration of the building. The separation of age groups into separate wings was the result of community meetings to ensure the best programming for each group. The intricate planning of the interiors also produced a north-south grain of shelving to ensure light and views. Meanwhile, the planning of the ceiling was the result of optimizing the beam configuration to orchestrate the rainwater conveyance system above. The cross-weave of these two grains produced the unique spatial circumstances of the interior of the building.

Jury comments: A lively and vibrant approach to a library space that creates a fun direction, with significant, evident public benefit as a plus. The geometries created on the outside are again reflected on the interior, and emphasized with baffles throughout the space that create a strong integration. The color palette and material choices are sophisticated and contemporary and break out of the typical public library design box. The jury was pleased that this project engaged directly with the Framework for Design Excellence criteria and took DEI criteria to heart, resulting in a broadly sustainable, integrated design solution.
