Project overview: 1490 Southern Boulevard creates a senior housing community that celebrates and supports the best of the South Bronx. Project location: Bronx, New York
Firm name: Bernheimer Architecture
Project type: Affordable Senior Housing
Project information: New construction
Jury comments: This project sensitively and creatively provides affordable homes for elderly individuals in the Bronx. The massing carefully considers the site context and successfully constructs outdoor common terraces and a green roof through setbacks on upper levels. The quality of materials and emphasis on accessibility support the Jewish Association Serving the Aging (JASA) programming on the ground level. JASA develops social programming for residents and provides legal, health, and mental health services. The design prioritizes sustainable efforts through Enterprise Green Communities, and the process involved community engagement and user consideration.
