Jury comments: This large-scale adaptive reuse project is restrained and responsible. It raises an important if difficult question for designers, especially in this moment of climate crisis: when and how should we do less? The light touch of the architect allows the structure’s history to speak and spotlights the art on display. Though the work might appear to be minimal, the technical challenges of reinvigorating a historic industrial building must not be underestimated. MASS MoCA Building 6 is a deliberate and admirable work, designed in service of its audiences and artwork.
