Project name: Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art
Project location: Clinton, New York
Firm name: Machado and Silvetti Associates
Jury comments: This elegant new museum occupies a prominent site at the entrance to a private college campus, anchoring the edge of a newly formed arts quad. Visitors enter through an open and glazed archive. Transparency through the archive cases provides students and visitors with a “behind the scenes” look into the workings of the museum’s restoration laboratory and administrative offices, and reinforces the project’s teaching mission. Some galleries are reconfigurable, encouraging innovative uses. With clarity and a nice composition of materials, the central idea about transparency is followed all the way through. The design is consistently austere–which is not necessarily a positive.
