Jury comments: The building is awkwardly (but forgivably) massed on a narrow peninsula. High winds, a high-velocity flood zone, and extensive wetlands all significantly influence its shape and the surrounding landscape. To celebrate the school’s long and storied bond with the ocean without literally introducing a lighthouse, the main staircase wraps around a light core which illuminates the stair and provides a beacon to people approaching the campus from the main entrance. There are a lot of look-out towers over the south shore, in a very appropriate nod to vernacular. It’s a thoughtful project, though some of the best parts were done by the landscape architects.
