Finalist
Project name: Field Elementary School
Project location: Weston, Massachusetts
Firm name: Jonathan Levi Architects
Jury comments: No opportunity for excellence is missed in this public school. Daylighting is exceptional, even on a cloudy autumn afternoon. Clarity, simplicity, and logic combine for a fantastic exterior that is well connected to the inside. The decision to move the building into the site’s existing slope demonstrates an architect working at a very high level, making so much more out of conditions than many others could or would. The building influences the very way that teachers teach. Every child should have the opportunity to attend a school so conducive to learning.
This school, made possible entirely by public funds, is evidence that we can build wonderful spaces in which to educate our children. It is also a reminder that new design voices are needed in the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) selection process so that, as their children learn and grow, more parents might advocate for and see the benefits of delightful and thoughtfully designed schools.
