Project name: Mattapan Community Health Center
Project location: Mattapan, Massachusetts
Firm name:Steffian Bradley Architects
Jury comments: With clean, basic lines and contemporary design, this four-story community health center supports a program that elevates an under-resourced urban area. The building massing defines the neighborhood’s new urban scale. Clinical space sits atop a retail pharmacy and community bank. The building facade consists of a terracotta rain screen and large windows that allow healthy daylighting into the space. Pops of interior colors are reminiscent of the culture of Haiti and the Caribbean Islands, from which the majority of the neighborhood heritage derives. The center of the building provides three stories of glass that opens to an urban square in the front, and neighborhoods in the rear. The building seems easy to maintain and is a terrific example of government-funded work that is well executed on a moderate budget.
