Jury comments: The landscape surrounding this private residence is elaborately planted, with over 40 different varieties of Japanese maple trees. These extensive gardens limit the footprint of the new house, resulting in a compact volume penetrated by slot gardens and entry decks that both define space within the house, and erode the boundary between interior and exterior. The slot gardens are organized by a central courtyard that contains a single tree, making nature the centerpiece of the home. Sited in a neighborhood filled with traditional New England houses, the structure’s steel cladding and ample glazing introduce an urban response to a non-urban environment. The design turns everything inward. The details are exceptionally innovative.
