Jury comments: This handsome retrofit of a terrible old building is a good example of how much can be done on a shoe string budget, proving that “green” is not just a feature of luxury buildings. By insulating the envelope, replacing the windows, and eschewing existing balconies to increase interior spaces, every potential opportunity for employing a sustainability strategy while improving aesthetics was maximized. These cost effective solutions are a good model for other public housing buildings. The systems do not represent cutting edge technology, but are sound, successful, and represent the baseline for where we should be going. Taking this approach may get a community to net zero as a whole.
